Thank You!

Good Morning!

Well, Jason has been out of town this week, so you know what that means…sick kid! This time it was Jack.

(I have a picture of Jack to place here, but it included a stuffed animal so it was not allowed.)
He woke up Wednesday morning with upset stomach, sore throat and a fever, so he stayed home. Thursday I kept him home in the morning and then he thought he was good to go for the afternoon. When I picked him up after school, he was beat and said his throat was killing him. So, off to the Doctor to check for strep. The test came back negative. He has a virus. Doctor was able to tell that in less than 60 seconds.  Off I went to teach a class, so my mom and dad were with the boys. When I got home, Jack’s eye was red, puffy and goop coming out of it. Great…pink eye or a cold in the eye. So, waiting to see how his eye is this morning, or back to the doctor. When it rains, it pours.

I do need to thank my parents and my work family/friends for helping me out this week! It is greatly appreciated by me and Jack!!

A HUGE THANK YOU!!!

Just Finished…

Welcome Back!

My reading has been in the slumps lately. I have been book hopping from book to book like no other. I just cannot find on that will keep my interest, though I have managed to finish two quick reads.

The first book I read was Harlan Coben’s Home.
https://thebookspyblog.files.wordpress.com/2016/03/home-harlan-coben.jpg?w=242&h=365
This is the 11-12th book in the Myron Boulton series. Oops. Didn’t know that. So, I would highly suggest that you read the other books in the series to enjoy Home. A friend read it, who follows the series, and said it was like catching up with old friends and he really loved the book. I, on the other hand, thought the book told a lot about these “old friends” that I really had no interest in, because I didn’t know their back stories. If you follow the series, my understanding is that you will enjoy this story. If you do not follow the series, I would skip this one until reading the others in the series.

The next book I finished was
You Will Know Me
by Megan Abbott
https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41kqzQIBlZL._SY344_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg

Wow. This book is disturbing on many different levels.

Devon Knox is a gymnast, a good one. Her dream is the Olympics, and her parents make it theirs, too — practices and equipment and a second mortgage to pay for it all. And then, the handsome boyfriend of her coach’s niece, who always helped around the gym, holding doors for the moms, digging retainers out of the foam pit, is killed in a hit-and-run.  Devon’s mom Katie, who narrates most of the book, begins to take a harder look at her family: Her blank-eyed daughter, 4’10” and muscled with legs like the trunks of trees. Her overworked husband, who does everything for Devon, for her chance at the Olympics.

abbot thrusts the reader into a full immersion into this world, and it is incredibly effective. the book is primarily delivered through katie’s perspective, so it’s technically an outsider’s experience, but she’s supplanted so much of her own life to focus on devon’s career, she’s as tunnel-visioned as devon, and the scene where she goes to devon’s school and sees her, for the first time in ages, among regular teens instead of other gymnasts, is shockingly powerful.

The theme about greatness requiring great sacrifices and the question about should those sacrifices be made at any cost is explored in this book, which at times I found disturbing.  Devon might be able to do something that very few can, but does that mean she should have had to give up a normal childhood and teenage experiences? Devon is at the gym as much a possible. She doesn’t have “normal” relationships, nor does she do “normal” teenage things…but, she is following her dream or is it the dream of everyone around her?  I found myself thinking she didn’t even know how to act in teenage situations. How will this effect her future life?

Is she doing this because it’s her dream or because so many adults around her have their own reasons for wanting her to succeed? It is insane about what the adults around her do and act so they can “help” Devon get to the Olympics. They spend money on the gym, which I saw as buying a piece of Devon. One mom decides that Devon should switch gyms and takes her to a different gym, because she paid for the new pit in the gym.  If Devon wins, they can have the best coaches, the best facilities…so about them and not Devon.

Should the Knoxes have dedicated so much of themselves towards a single goal of one child, or does a parent of a kid with an extraordinary talent have a responsibility to do anything to see it fulfilled? I think Katie, the mother of Devon, knows this is all insane and not “normal” for lack of a better word. But, just think of all the amazing things that will happen if Devon makes it to the Olympics…for her, her family and Oh! Devon, too. And by the way, Devon has a brother Drew that has grown up in the gym. What “normal” childhood does Drew have?

So, not only is this book a murder mystery, but also brings up lots of questions about the length that parents go to keep the dream of their child alive or is it the dream of their own they are keeping alive?

The beginning of this book is slow, but hang in there, it does start to twist and turn. I would give this book 3.5 stars.

Wow.

Hello!

I must say that I am glad that this is a new week. Have you ever felt like you have been put through the wringer? Last week was definitely one of those weeks…for many different happenings and reasons. So today, I am staring with a little message for all of us…

until-the-end-of-time

Or you can build a box.

Hmmmm….I think Jack has the right idea!
He even asked if I wanted to get in and try it out! (heart)

Sending out good vibes, peace and calm thoughts to everyone who is going thorough their own thing, because believe me, we all have things going on that could use a little peace and love.

Voted!

Hello!

Jason and I headed out to the polls nice an early yesterday to cast our votes! We did not take this picture inside the polls..outside only!!

img_0944

It’s time for this election to be over, my boys are tired of it all!

Jack got in the car on Monday and said, “In school we are studying the candidates for President. I am so tired of people talking about them. I am so ready for this election to be over!” He’s 11!!

Sam and a friend got in a very heated argument over the candidates. Sam? Yep. It’s time for the election to be over.

Hope you voted yesterday and followed your heart on this one!
(I am writing this before election results.)

IDK

Happy Monday!

I must explain my photo issues.  You may have noticed at times, that my photos are sideways. I cannot figure out why. When I am writing a post, they are in the correct position. I have had “reports” that on Apple devices, sometimes pictures are sideways. So, I have corrected the positioning while blogging and now on PC devices, they appear sideways. I love to take pictures in square form, so I am thinking that may have something to do with the problem.

Will continue to experiment…until then, just lift up your computer and turn it sideways to enjoy a photo!

So..is the top photo sideways or is the bottom photo sideways?
Let me know in the comments…it will be very helpful!! 🙂

Kind of like…do you see a white and gold dress or a black and blue dress?

Jump!

Hello!

One of the best things about fall are the leaves. Jason worked on leaves this weekend. It is a never ending battle. We can’t just “leave” them on the ground, because there are just too many and they won’t go away on their own.

These are all from the one tree outside our front door.
img_0723

Rake them up and you have a great jumping pile! Jack is in the picture to represent size.

A running start…

With a last minute twist….img_0774-001

And he is gone! Except for his foot…img_0775-001

That was AWESOME!!!img_0777-001
Once again, to be young again and be able to jump in a pile of leaves without saying, “Oh…my back! “Oh..my hip. can someone help me up?”

Pumpkin Update…

Hello!

Well, it took less then 24 hours for Jack’s pumpkin to be eaten by some THING!!

We lit the pumpkins Sunday night before heading out to trick or treat. Just a quick reminder that Jack’s had a little top hat, mustache and teeth held into it’s mouth with toothpicks.
img_0794

When we came home, we blew out the candles and the pumpkins were still in good shape.

I went out to light the candles again around 5:00 on Monday night and noticed this…Oh My!!
img_0828
What ever ate this thing, went crazy! Where you take the top of the pumpkin off to put in a candle…they ate that lid. They ate the eyes…they ate the mustache…and they ate all the teeth and left the toothpicks.

Jason wasn’t touched. Must have be the rotten insides!

Happy Halloween

Why, Helloooo!

Halloween has come and gone and I would say it was another successful holiday!

This year Jack went as a 1920s gangster. I don’t know why or how he thought it up. But, he planned it from top to bottom and absolutely loved his costume!
img_0632-001

Jason and Jack carved pumpkins.
img_0789

Jack worked on his own this year. Just a helpful hint: eat lunch before carving, not while carving. Jack’s lunch was ready for him right after he started carving. He couldn’t eat. The “guts” made him lose his appetite. Especially since Jason’s guts which were a little rotten. (ew)

img_0790

Sam mowed while the pumpkins were being carved.Pumpkin smells and guts are not a favorite of Sam’s. You may think he is giving the boys a thumbs up for the amazing carved decorations they are creating with their pumpkins. Well, you are correct. It has nothing to do with him hitting the side of the fountain and telling his dad all was good still.fullsizerender

Jack’s finished pumpkin. Notice he has a mustache and a little top hat!

Jack placed his creation in the flower urn which was perfect for angling his face!

What a welcoming front porch!  (smile)img_0798

Wonder how long these guys will last until something decides to eat them!

PS: Sam did come into the garage after mowing lawn. He stayed as far away from the mess as possible. He got inside with only one gag!
img_0792
I am very proud of him! Every year he gets a little better with the whole pumpkin carving event!

Here’s Jack before heading out to trick or treat. He slicked his hair back to look even more “gansta” (his hat is on the pmpking)  But, I’m not sure the AK Nerf gun helped the outfit…along with a computer bag of all his treats!
img_0803
People asked if Jack if he was the Monopoly man, or a poker dealer, or part of a quartet!

Since Trick or Treat was on a Sunday night, Jack had to get ready for school and bed when we got home. He didn’t get to do the fun sorting of the candy.
img_0811

Doesn’t seem to have stopped Jason from checking out all the loot though!

ISU Homecoming!

Welcome Back!

This weekend, we headed up to our old stomping grounds, Iowa State, for the homecoming football game. The weather was absolutely perfect for  tailgating with friends and a football game, unfortunately, the game was far from  perfect!
img_0771-001

We got there nice and early…plenty of time for breakfast!
img_0724

The family that wears hats together…stays together!img_0726

The last game we all went together was back in 2012! Sam was 10 and Jack was 7. (sniff…times does go by so fast)

Brats for breakfast!
img_0734

Our Manny, Cory!! Last time we had a picture of these two, Sam could fit under Cory’s arm!!
img_0737

We had great seats for the game. When the game wasn’t going so well, I had plenty of people watching to do! In the lower left corner, the defensive coaches would hold their hands up and then it looked like they would break out into a dance. Sam and I called them “The Dancing men.” At one point, a couple of the players had a big yelling match. Like I said, fun people watching.

A famous person spotting…Frank, the meteorologist from Channel 8!! img_0769
Just have to say when you get up that early, by 1:00pm you are done! And by 9:00pm, you are in bed….fast asleep! Jason and I decided that we are old when one day (without drinks) wipes us out. Oh…to be young again!

Practicing…

Hello!

Jack has taken up the saxophone this year. (yea.) He needs to practice every evening. (owie on the ears.) We need to find him a set place to practice because he has a tendency to practice wherever he may be sitting at the time.

This day, he decided to practice by Sam…who was doing his homework. Sam was such a good sport, but every once in a while, Jack would “squawk”a bit and you can tell those times from Sam’s face.
img_0698

Jack kept practicing, but everyone in a while, Sam would give me a look. You gotta love it!
img_0700

This isn’t the first time Jack had played for us. One night my family was over and Jack did a little solo for us. He forgot to give us a heads up to when he would be starting, so when the first note blew across the air, everyone jumped, I got the giggles and then looked at my dad. The poor guy had his hearing aids in and the sax about blew his eardrums out! This is Jack’s reenactment of poor grandpa.
img_0431

Being a good sport, Dad took our his hearing aids, Jack gave a count down to when he would start to play and we all enjoyed a little concert.
