The Last Couple of Weeks…

Hello…

This has been our house lately…
img_0005

Minus the vitamins…not good.

Sam caught a cold from school.
He then gave it to Jack…who lost his voice with it!Jack then gave it me. UGH! I had it BAD! Lost my voice and the cold is still lingering, just can’t kick it…especially at night with the cough cough cough!! And my light snoring, which has woken ME up (and Jason.) There are times I wake up and think “WHAT WAS THAT NOISE?” oops..just me.
I then gave it to Jason. Who recovered from it fairly quickly, but constantly asked me, “What should I take?” And then he took all of my favorite cold medicine and so I snored to get back at him.

I had to laugh when I saw this video.

This video is actually to my dear son, Sam, who just stated that he thinks HE had the cold the longest and the worst! (Oh really?! Wow!) He would wonder if the lump on his foot was gang-green…seriously, he would.

What I Have Been Reading

Hello!

I haven’t posted about books that I have finished, so I am going to give you a quick overview of ones that I have recently finished. Reviews will be from Amazon and I will give you a quick opinion!

The Secrets of Midwives
https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/14/ca/7c/14ca7ce047deda53b09b9639c20e3256.jpg

From Amazon:
Three generations of women
Secrets in the present and from the past
A captivating tale of life, loss, and love…

Neva Bradley, a third-generation midwife, is determined to keep the details surrounding her own pregnancy-including the identity of the baby’s father- hidden from her family and co-workers for as long as possible. Her mother, Grace, finds it impossible to let this secret rest. The more Grace prods, the tighter Neva holds to her story, and the more the lifelong differences between private, quiet Neva and open, gregarious Grace strain their relationship.

For Floss, Neva’s grandmother and a retired midwife, Neva’s situation thrusts her back sixty years in time to a secret that eerily mirrors her granddaughter’s-one which, if revealed, will have life-changing consequences for them all. As Neva’s pregnancy progresses and speculation makes it harder and harder to conceal the truth, Floss wonders if hiding her own truth is ultimately more harmful than telling it. Will these women reveal their secrets and deal with the inevitable consequences? Or are some secrets best kept hidden?

I loved the grandma’s story the best! Just her story alone makes it worth reading. I would give this 3 out of 5 stars.

A Monster Calls
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/a/aa/A_Monster_Calls.jpg

From Amazon:
At seven minutes past midnight, thirteen-year-old Conor wakes to find a monster outside his bedroom window. But it isn’t the monster Conor’s been expecting– he’s been expecting the one from his nightmare, the nightmare he’s had nearly every night since his mother started her treatments. The monster in his backyard is different. It’s ancient. And wild. And it wants something from Conor. Something terrible and dangerous. It wants the truth. From the final idea of award-winning author Siobhan Dowd– whose premature death from cancer prevented her from writing it herself– Patrick Ness has spun a haunting and darkly funny novel of mischief, loss, and monsters both real and imagined.

This book is really good and I am still digesting it. Jason was out of town, bought it at the airport and read it in 2 hours. We both agree that we might not be able to go see the movie because we might go into “English Patient” crying AKA sobbing. (I SOBBED at that movie and could not get it together even after the movie! Jason got the giggles about my crying and didn’t even well up during the movie!!  Now we refer to sobbing crying as “going English Patient!”) I would give this book a 4 our of 5 stars.

In a Dark Dark Wood
In a Dark, Dark Wood

From Amazon:
What should be a cozy and fun-filled weekend deep in the English countryside takes a sinister turn in Ruth Ware’s suspenseful, compulsive, and darkly twisted psychological thriller.

Sometimes the only thing to fear…is yourself.

When reclusive writer Leonora is invited to the English countryside for a weekend away, she reluctantly agrees to make the trip. But as the first night falls, revelations unfold among friends old and new, an unnerving memory shatters Leonora’s reserve, and a haunting realization creeps in: the party is not alone in the woods.

The review from Amazon is scarier than the book. Leonora (AKA Lee or Nora) is invited to a hen party (AKA bachelorete party weekend) to a gal that she hadn’t seen or spoken to in 10 years. I felt as if the first part of the book was all about how Leonora did not want to go, didn’t want to be there AND wan’t invited to the wedding??? So I found myself thinking, “Don’t go! Leave! You weren’t invited to the wedding and you are still gong…DUH!!!”

This was probably the best part of the book:
In a Dark, Dark Wood opens in a hospital room, where a young woman wakes with contusions, scratches and a woeful head injury. Worse than her physical state, she is afflicted by memory loss and a nagging sense of guilt. She sees uniformed policemen stationed outside her room. “What happened?” she asks herself. Close upon the heels of that thought comes another one: “What have I done?”

There are a few twists that make you go “Oh.” But I just kept thinking…Go home!! I would give this book 2 out of 5 stars.

The Fireman

From Amazon:
No one knows exactly when it began or where it originated. A terrifying new plague is spreading like wildfire across the country, striking cities one by one: Boston, Detroit, Seattle. The doctors call it Draco Incendia Trychophyton. To everyone else it’s Dragonscale, a highly contagious, deadly spore that marks its hosts with beautiful black and gold marks across their bodies—before causing them to burst into flames. Millions are infected; blazes erupt everywhere. There is no antidote. No one is safe.

Harper Grayson, a compassionate, dedicated nurse as pragmatic as Mary Poppins, treated hundreds of infected patients before her hospital burned to the ground. Now she’s discovered the telltale gold-flecked marks on her skin. When the outbreak first began, she and her husband, Jakob, had made a pact: they would take matters into their own hands if they became infected. To Jakob’s dismay, Harper wants to live—at least until the fetus she is carrying comes to term. At the hospital, she witnessed infected mothers give birth to healthy babies and believes hers will be fine too. . . if she can live long enough to deliver the child.

Convinced that his do-gooding wife has made him sick, Jakob becomes unhinged, and eventually abandons her as their placid New England community collapses in terror. The chaos gives rise to ruthless Cremation Squads—armed, self-appointed posses roaming the streets and woods to exterminate those who they believe carry the spore. But Harper isn’t as alone as she fears: a mysterious and compelling stranger she briefly met at the hospital, a man in a dirty yellow fire fighter’s jacket, carrying a hooked iron bar, straddles the abyss between insanity and death. Known as The Fireman, he strolls the ruins of New Hampshire, a madman afflicted with Dragonscale who has learned to control the fire within himself, using it as a shield to protect the hunted . . . and as a weapon to avenge the wronged.

I enjoyed this book! It was my first Joe Hill book and I think I might read some of his other books now. It is 700+ pages and gets a bit wordy and long in parts (like his dad’s books) but, overall I liked the character and the story and how everyone evolves. I would give this 3.75 out of 5 stars. 🙂

Happy Reading!

A Couple of Firsts…

Hello!

Well, if you live in my community (or in central Iowa), the big talk on Saturday was is you felt the earthquake! What? An earthquake in the middle of Iowa…yep! It happened around 7:05ish Saturday morning and it was the strangest thing!

Jason and I were just waking up and our blinds started to shake back and forth hitting the edge of the windows. Ok. That is super weird.  And we suddenly became pretty freaked out because there was no explanation…we didn’t leave a window opened, the air conditioning didn’t just kick in. Soooo… Jason went straight to the paranormal. “I think a ghost just went through our windows.” I didn’t say anything, but in my mind I did a quick body check to make sure I didn’t feel anything trying to posses my body. (Ugh!) All was good and chalked it up to no explanation.

Shortly after, Jason got on his phone and discovered that our town had actually felt the aftershocks of an earthquake that occurred in Oklahoma! WOW!!

After all that excitement, I went out to mow the lawn. I actually do not mind mowing. It’s time to myself and to think without interruptions. While mowing, I went past a large hole in the ground and thought…”Wow, that’s a big hole. Wonder what’s in it? And why are all those bees flying around it?”

“BAD WORDS BAD WORDS!” because as soon as I realized it was an underground beehive, it was too late and I mowed right over that thing.

Not good.

This isn’t the actual hive in our yard, but this is what it looked like, but with lots of bees around it.

I must have stirred them up as I was mowing closer and closer to them.

Anyway, as soon as i ran over it, I took off as fast as i could on my mower because bees were all over me! I think I was lucky because I had on sweats and a sweatshirt so I was pretty covered up EXCEPT, for my feet which had on flip flops.

OH GOLLY! A bee stung me right between my toes! It tucked it’s little body between my toes and stung me. Oh. My. Word. I have not been stung before and that hurts! Hurts WAY more than I thought it would.

I finally had to kill the bee by hitting my toes repeatedly with my hand and then pulling the bee out from between my toes once I got the mower stopped. Oh the pain!!

I hobbled inside and pulled out the stinger…gross. I have not been stung before, so I don’t know if I was allergic…now I know that I am not.

Now for some pictures of my nasty toes!

You can see where the little guy stung me to the right of my pinky toe. You can see it because those “little” toes are starting to swell…which is a normal side effect of a bee sting.

About an hour later.

You can see the redness had spread and oh boy…it hurt! It actually hurt for the rest of the day and into the night! I took Advil and Benadryl to help with the pain and swelling. Finally, the next morning everything was back to “normal.” My foot no longer hurt and I wasn’t awoken by strange tremors. How was your weekend?

School Album

Hello!

Today I want to share with you a fourth grade mini album I created for Jack! I used the Bo Bunny collection Pop Quiz (all pieces available at Memory Bound.) It’s a great line and lends itself easily to a quick school album that highlights the year!

I believe the best part of completing an album is when give it to the person you made it for and they sit and look at it and soak in all the details. That is exactly what Jack did and to top it off, he looked at me and said, “Thank you, mom!”

What I’ve Been Reading

Hello, Readers!

I just finished a wonderful book!
Homegoing
by Yaa Gyasi

Image result for homegoing

From Amazon:
The unforgettable New York Times best seller begins with the story of two half-sisters, separated by forces beyond their control: one sold into slavery, the other married to a British slaver. Written with tremendous sweep and power, Homegoing traces the generations of family who follow, as their destinies lead them through two continents and three hundred years of history, each life indelibly drawn, as the legacy of slavery is fully revealed in light of the present day.

Effia and Esi are born into different villages in eighteenth-century Ghana. Effia is married off to an Englishman and lives in comfort in the palatial rooms of Cape Coast Castle. Unbeknownst to Effia, her sister, Esi, is imprisoned beneath her in the castle’s dungeons, sold with thousands of others into the Gold Coast’s booming slave trade, and shipped off to America, where her children and grandchildren will be raised in slavery. One thread of Homegoing follows Effia’s descendants through centuries of warfare in Ghana, as the Fante and Asante nations wrestle with the slave trade and British colonization. The other thread follows Esi and her children into America. From the plantations of the South to the Civil War and the Great Migration, from the coal mines of Pratt City, Alabama, to the jazz clubs and dope houses of twentieth-century Harlem, right up through the present day, Homegoing makes history visceral, and captures, with singular and stunning immediacy, how the memory of captivity came to be inscribed in the soul of a nation.

When I first looked at the book, I noticed that each chapter was about a different person. (huh?) The book begins with a chapter about Effia and her life. The second chapter is about Esi, the second family story in the book, and her life. The next chapter is about Effia’s son, James, which goes back to the first family’s story.

WAIT! How am I going to find out what happens to Effia when they have already moved onto the next generation? Well, that is what is absolutely amazing about this book. The third chapter, James, is about Effia’s son. He tells his life story while continuing Effia’s story from a son’s point of view. It is amazing how the author tells the stories of the generations throughout the story, but in a way that I have never encountered in a book before. It also has a wonderful wrap-up at the end of the book for both family lines. The author wrote this in a brilliant manner.

I would give this book a 5 out of 5 stars! In my opinion, it is a must read!

A Family in Mourning.

The boys have had such high expectations for the Vikings this year. A great new stadium, AP back full force and an amazing QB…Teddy Two Gloves AKA Jack’s favorite player.
Image result for teddy bridgewater

That all came to a screeching halt before we even got the season on the way. Yesterday in practice Teddy Bridgewater (our QB) tore is ACL. Usually when there’s an injury in practice, they move the practice to another part of the field. This was so devastating to the players, that the Vikings actually cancelled practice.

Jason was working from home yesterday. He walked into the room and buried his face head first into the pillows and just laid there. I figured it was a work thing. He then looked up and said, “I am so sick to my stomach. Have you been on twitter?” My first thought was that someone broke their leg or an appendage in a terrible manner and he saw it on twitter. But no. He then said, “TB tore his ACL. Out for rest of season.” And he left the room.

I told Jack when he got home from school. I thought he was going to cry.

This is the text I got from Sam when he heard the news.

So, if we seem a little down. Please excuse us. It’s already been a tough football season. But at least we have the new stadium!

Amazing Cleaner

Hello!

I don’t like to clean…but who does? But, when I find a cleaner that makes me happy because it is easy, meaning that I don’t have to do much scrubbing, then I just have to share!

We have terrible hard water. Not just a few hard water stains, but horrible hard water that leaves stains around the faucets, in the tub and anywhere water can stand. So, our glass shower door is awful!! You should be able to see through the door, but it actually looks frosted due to the hard water stains.

We have tried everything… and I mean everything to get the stains off and then Jason brought home some magic, literally magic in a bottle!

http://www.dteps.com/assets/images/brand/cp/00117.jpg

This powerful GEL goes on easily without irritating fumes (unlike spray cleaners). Shower Door Magic cuts through scum and leaves a protective shield that repels water deposits and soap scum reducing the need for daily scrubbing and cleaning. The fresh grapefruit scent leaves your shower smelling pleasant. (SDM contains no harsh fumes, so you do not cough or gag. BONUS!!) Use on shower door and all washable bathroom surfaces of glass, acrylic, porcelain, ceramic, stainless steel, copper, brass and more!

Everything that little paragraph says it true! Except maybe for the fresh grapefruit scent. It smells clean, but I don’t know if it is a pleasant clean smell. But it doesn’t matter!! It works!

All I need to do is squirt it on my door in an “S” motion, use a paper towel to wipe all over the door, let it sit for about a minute and wash off! That’s it!!! Magic!! Easy!!

This is not my shower door, but it might as well be! And yes, the soap scum comes off the door that easy.
http://www.areal-lifehousewife.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/DSC_1308.jpg

So if you have any hard water stains or soap scum, then you need to get some Shower Door Magic! You won’t be disappointed!

Life Questions

A Question or Two for You to Ponder…

  1. Do you floss and then brush or bush and then floss?
  2.  Do you wet your hands and then add soap or put soap in your hands and then water?
  3. And a third question: How many days does a boy walk right past his hamper before he takes it to his room?

DSC_0106

To be honest, I don’t’ know the answer to any of these questions, but I have high hopes to have an answer to number 3 soon.

Football Has Begun!

Welcome!

Tonight I am off to Sam’s first football game as a Freshman (ugh, sniff) and I am super excited (insert smile with a slight grimace) to see what this football season brings!

Last week Sam’s school had an all sports Fall Kick Off…essentially, it is a big pep rally. I actually enjoyed seeing all the different sports and players (and parents to chit chat with!)

Here are the Freshman football players walking onto the field. Each players name was read over the loud speaker…pretty cool! Sam is second in line. #59
IMG_9739

Sam was right beside his good friend. I waved to them both, Sam just smiled and his friend, which I didn’t catch on film (darn), actually waved back!! And then probably said to Sam, “I’m so glad that is your mom and not mine!”
IMG_9749

Earlier that afternoon, the boys had gotten their football uniforms and I just had to get a picture! It took awhile for Sam to get on his game face!
IMG_9701

The “bigs” both have younger brothers and the four of them can be found hanging out together.
IMG_9710

Don’t let the pictures fool you. It’s not always peaches and cream by any means. Right after this picture, the bigs grabbed Jack to trap him under their sweaty smelling armpits.
IMG_9706

That so has to be a guy thing. Gross.

Happy football season!

First Day of School!

Hello!

The first day of school was today and I must admit, this gets a little harder each year when I thought it would get a easier.

This year Sam is a Freshman (ugh!!) and Jack is in 5th grade. As you can see, Sam spent his summer growing out his hair and Jack fits nicely into Sam’s armpit.
IMG_9804

I can’t believe that this picture was taken just a year ago! At that time I thought they were so grown up…and look at them now!

Happy first day of school to all the kiddos in your life!
